Collection of Cord Blood Stem Cells
1. How new is cord blood collection?
The first cord blood transplant took place in the late 1980’s. Since that first transplant, it is estimated that more than 20,000 transplants have taken place. Private Banks have made it possible for families to store their cord blood since the mid-1990’s. Today, cord blood banking has become more popular than ever with the recognition of the amazing potential for the use of stem cells in alleviating and curing serious and oftentimes life threatening medical problems.
2. When is the cord blood collected?
Cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord as part of the delivery procedure just after the birth of the baby once the umbilical cord has been separated from the mother and baby. This is the only time that this blood can be collected and is, therefore, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The procedure is painless, quick and performed by your healthcare professional.
3. How is the cord blood collected?
The cord blood is taken from the umbilical cord just after the birth of your baby and is immediately drawn into NeoCells’ UmbiliCord Collection Kit blood bag using standard blood bag collection procedures.
4. Is collection amount important?
Yes. Studies have shown that larger cord blood stem cell collection samples have a better engraftment rate in transplant procedures. NeoCells’ UmbiliCord Collection Kit blood bag is provided to help your caregiver optimize blood collection volumes. The minimum acceptable collection volume is 40mL, with an ideal collection consisting of between 100 and 140mL.
5. Is there any risk to my child during collection?
There is no risk to your child during collection. The blood is drawn after the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut. The procedure is quick and painless and has no effect on the mother, the baby or the delivery process
6. Does the hospital need to provide any materials for collection?
No, the hospital doesn’t need to provide any other materials. Everything your medical delivery team needs to collect the cord blood is present in the UmbiliCord Collection Kit that you will receive from NeoCells. The UmbiliCord Collection Kit is custom designed to accommodate both vaginal and C-section deliveries.
7. How does C-section affect the collection process?
C-sections have not been shown to affect the amount of cord blood collected during delivery. Research has shown that blood volumes can be the same with both vaginal and C-section deliveries.
